Fancy seeing what the port looks like in action? Come and explore Auckland’s port on a public bus tour.

Jump on board the bus and drive right into the heart of the port on this 45-minute bus tour. This behind-the-scenes experience shows you a working port from the inside, big machinery and all!

With commentary from our very own port workers, come and learn about where your goods come and go from, the three largest cranes in New Zealand, and the world's first full sized ship handling electric tugboat, Sparky! We are never short of things to talk about at Port of Auckland and we can’t wait to take you beyond the red fence and share our knowledge with you.

As you will be entering a Customs Controlled Area (CCA) you will need to present a tamper proof photographic ID if you are 16 years and over. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must have their identity vouched for. It is against the law to enter a CCA without ID. If you don’t bring ID, we are legally not allowed to let you enter and you will not be let on the bus. Drivers Licence or Passport are both acceptable forms of ID.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pre-book? Or can I join the queue at the event?

You must pre-book your spot via Eventbrite.

Where do I check-in for my tour?

Make your way to the Port of Auckland Building at 1 Sunderland Street, Mechanics Bay. We have free parking at our main office. We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour’s scheduled departure time to allow ample time for boarding. You will be checked in before heading out.

How long is each tour and where will we go?

Each tour is approximately 45-minutes long from departure to arrival. The bus will venture all around the port’s wharves, under cranes, and through our container terminal. You'll get a close-up look at port operations along the way, including the cranes and straddle carriers and any ships in port.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There is parking available at the Port of Auckland Building. Off-street parking and nearby parking is very limited. Make sure you check the AT website for transport and bus options.

Can I update my registration information?

You can update the information on your order by clicking your order on the Tickets page of your Eventbrite account. If you can't see an "Edit" link please contact Port of Auckland by emailing info@poal.co.nz

Can I change my ride to another time?

You can transfer your tickets to another time subject to availability.

Why do you need details for each passenger?

We need to request details for all passengers, including kids, as you will be entering a Customs Controlled Area (just like going into the airport), so that you have the option to transfer tickets at a later date if required, and as a security measure. Please do not forget your ID.

Can I bring a mobility aid?

Yes, the bus is designed to accommodate a range of mobility aids.
