About this event

Join fellow alumni and UC staff for a thought-provoking panel event on climate change. Hosted by UC alumnus Phil Vine (Journalist and Climate strategist) this event is the perfect opportunity to learn more about climate change, and what we are doing in this area within New Zealand. Our panellists have a wealth of knowledge and experience between them, providing the opportunity to hear about climate change from a range of unique perspectives.

Our panellists:

Professor Dave Frame (BSc 1991, MSc (Hons) 1994, PhD 1998) is the Director of the New Zealand Climate Change Research Institute (CCRI) at Victoria University of Wellington. He was the inaugural Director of the Deep South National Science Challenge and is the Director of "Extreme Events and the Emergence of Climate Change" a $10M Endeavour Fund project.

Dr Deborah Hume (BSc 1993, MSc (Hons) 1995) is currently the National Manager of Multimodal and Innovation for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. She has previously worked with local government to transform public transport provision, leading Wellington metro and New Zealand's rail tourism brand (Scenic Journeys) for Kiwiwail.

Dr Rod Carr currently serves as the Chairperson for the Climate Change Commission. He has extensive experience in both public and private sector governance and leadership. Serving as Chair and non-executive director of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Deputy Governor and for a time Acting Governor of the Bank. Dr Carr was the founding Chair of the National Infrastructure Advisory Board and for over a decade was a non-executive director of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce. He led UC as Vice Chancellor for ten years.

Livia Hollins (BSc 2002) is an international civil servant with experience working in a variety of international and national roles to advance meaningful action on climate change and sustainable development including with the United Nations and New Zealand Government. Livia has recently returned to NZ, re-joining the Ministry for the Environment, pushing NZ's climate action and local resilience.

Dr John Reid (Ngāti Pikiao, Tainui, Tauiwi) is a Senior Research Fellow at the UC Ngāi Tahu Research Centre and is a specialist in indigenous economic development with a particular focus on land, freshwater, and ocean sustainability. John current leads three national science programmes concerning biodiversity, marine economies, and environmental wellbeing. He has a particular interest in climate adaptation, exploring the risks and opportunities that climate change presents to iwi.
