In this second webinar, Dr Monique Jonas will host an expert panel discussion with Privacy Commissioner, John Edwards and medical ethicist, Associate Professor Angela Ballantyne on the interplay between the privacy and ethical frameworks that govern research activity in Aotearoa.

Speakers

John Edwards has been appointed to the independent statutory position of Privacy Commissioner since 2014. Prior to his appointment, John practiced law for over 20 years specialising in information law and has acted in legal roles for the State Services Commission, Ministry of Health, Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet and Inland Revenue Department. For 15 years, he held a warrant as a district inspector for mental health and has also been a district inspector for intellectual disability services.

Angela Ballantyne teaches medical ethics at the University of Otago, Wellington and has previously served as President of the International Association of Bioethics (2016-2017) and as a member of the Central Health and Disability Ethics Committee (2010-2018). Angela’s current research interest include the ethics of research on clinical data and tissue without explicit patient consent. Refer to Angela's full profile here.

Monique Jonas is an ethical theorist specialising in health care ethics; distributive justice in health; the relationship between the family and the state; and decision-making for children. Monique is Chair of the Health Research Council of New Zealand Ethics Committee and has previously served as a member of the National Ethics Advisory Committee. Refer to Monique's full profile here.
