An Evening With Jarrod Gilbert and John Price

About this event

What is “Progressive justice?” It is a type of policing that has injected new life into criminal justice reform in numerous countries. Seeking less punishment and fewer prosecutions of lower-level crimes, progressive policing looks toward community-based social solutions and more diversion programs. The program has been trialled in American cities like Chicago and Boston. Is it right for New Zealand? Join John and Jarrod as they explore the opportunities and limitations of progressive policing for Christchurch.

Dr Jarrod Gilbert is a New Zealand sociologist and the Director of Criminal Justice at the University of Canterbury. He is the author of Patched: The History of Gangs in New Zealand, an award winning and bestselling book, and the co-editor of Criminal Justice: A New Zealand Introduction, and A Rebel in Exile. He advises a number of government agencies on policy matters and was a member of Te Uepū, the Justice Advisory Group that investigated changes to the criminal justice system in New Zealand.

John Price ONZM, OStJ has been a member of the New Zealand Police since 1987 and has worked in a variety of operational and leadership roles both in General Duties and Criminal Investigations throughout the NZ and internationally.

John was also the Operations Commander for Operation Earthquake and managed the Rescue and Search Phase of the 22 February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake. John has served in four Districts and was the Area Commander for Kapiti-Mana. John took up the role of National Manager: Training and Development at the Royal New Zealand Police College in December 2012 before taking up his current position of District Commander: Canterbury Police District in June 2015. John also led the review into the Samoan Police Service in mid-2019.
