Event description

About this event

Kaitaia - 29th September 9.30am to 3.00pm

Nau mai haere mai.

Free wānanga on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on our tamariki/rangatahi.

If you are a community or health worker, parent, grandparent, caregiver, teacher, support or social worker, Police, Corrections or Youth Justice or other front-line worker .... you need to hear about this.

Reported by Northland principals, the Children's Commissioner Judge Andrew Becroft and health professionals across NZ as a “hidden tsunami” of children in need, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a huge threat to our whakapapa and can lead to a lifetime of tragedy for those affected and their whānau.

FASD and prenatal alcohol exposure also results in huge lifetime costs to society. The lack of understanding and ignorance about the consequences of alcohol use during pregnancy adds to the significant inequities already faced by many young people from adverse social determinants of health such as poor housing, income and employment, education, colonisation racism and discrimination, and disability.

This free workshop highlights the latest information you should know to better assist you in working with women of child-bearing age, whānau, and those who may have been affected by prenatal alcohol exposure.

You will learn what FASD is, why it occurs, how it manifests, the important key messages, advice to share and much, much more….

September is FASD Awareness Month
