About this event

Join us for a discussion on psychology and safety featuring academics, practitioners and government bodies. In this session Maria Carrera Arce of the World Maritime University will provide a summary of a recently published paper on SAFEMODE, an EU project looking at how to build a safety learning culture.

A key element emanating from this study, and subsequently reflected in IMO work, is about the strength of the connection between shore or office based staff and those in frontline operational roles. Tahlia Fisher, a human factors expert at TAIC, will be present to discuss how the findings interface with current practice in New Zealand.

This discussion will be augmented by WorkSafe, who have been collaborating with Maritime New Zealand on research projects including one looking at the psycho-social wellbeing of workers in different industries using the COPSOQ model. We’ll look at the opportunities to deploy and interpret psychological components of risk with expert input from Fatima Junaid of Massey University, who is a member of the COPSOQ global community of practice.

These discussions will be further applied to the New Zealand context through Darren Guard who has been heavily invested in supporting welfare in the fishing sector through developing programmes and safety courses.

Presentations:

1 SAFEMODE - Maria Carrera Arce, WMU

2 COPSOQ - Trang Khieu & Khandokar Akib Mohammad, WorkSafe

Discussants:

2 Fatima Junaid - Massey University
