About this event

Rā Tōmene | Open Day 2021 will be taking place on Thursday 9 September. This is our key recruitment event for future students, parents and whānau, and its success depends on staff throughout UC.

We’d love for our amazing UC staff members to join us and volunteer for UC Events.

The events team is looking for staff volunteers for the following:

Supplier of smiles – you have a great smile and enjoy making people happy. We want you along our Open Day trails to warmly welcome our visitors to UC. Hand out tote bags, scan tickets, greet those coming through the trails and wave goodbye to them at the end of the day. 'You take care of those all-important frontline tasks, wearing a big smile on your face.

Session Greeters - You love the buzz of people gathering, ready to learn. Every hour a new information session begins and you’ll be at the front of the line, scanning people in, managing the flow of people in and out of lecture theatres and helping people find the right session.

Information guru – providing help and support is your gig. We have stations on campus just for you this Rā Tōmene | Open Day. You’ll assist visitors with any questions they have, from where to get a good coffee to what time the next info session starts.

Data gatherer – you’ll happily ask people what they think. iPad in hand, we need you to approach attendees with a smile to get their feedback on Rā Tōmene | Open Day using the pre-populated survey online, you will ensure we get the data we require to keep running successful events.

Campus explorer – you know the campus well and can’t wait to show it off. We need you to take small groups of visitors on a loop of the campus, pointing out all the key buildings and facilities, especially the sparkly new ones, to help them get a feel for UC. You’ll answer questions as you go and point out where things are happening throughout the day.

Airport Ambassadors - you’ll be the first face they see when they step off the plane. You will be stationed at Christchurch Airport, warmly greeting our domestic and international out of town guests when they arrive. You will be the first face they see in Christchurch and a representative of UC. You’ll assist visitors with any questions they have and direct them to the free bus or other transport to their accommodation or Ilam Campus.

Carpark Traffic Control– you’re there to help direct people to available carparks. You love the excitement of guiding people in to find that spot, they may not have seen otherwise! Keen observation and quick decision making is your vibe. We will have two carparks on the go, your help is much appreciated.

Volunteering on the day is a great opportunity to meet future students and to experience the buzz of Rā Tōmene | Open Day. If you are interested in being involved, please check with your manager and register your interest. Sign up now!

Open Day runs from 9.00am to 5.00pm and is based in the centre of the Ilam campus, with volunteers scheduled for either a morning or afternoon session.

Thanks in advance to everyone who can volunteer their time for Rā Tōmene | Open Day 2021.

Founded in 1873, in Ōtautahi Christchurch, the University of Canterbury | Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha (UC) has an international reputation for academic excellence in teaching and research.

People come first at the University of Canterbury, reflecting our intrinsic values: whanaungatanga, manaakitanga and tiakitanga. These values are rooted in trust, care and reciprocity, and were embedded over generations of Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Tahu presence in the region. In fact, in 1861 Pita Te Hori, the first Upoko of Ngāi Tūāhuriri, instructed the founders of Ōtautahi: “kia atawhai ki te iwi – be kind to your people.” Today, these words underpin the relationships we foster amongst our students, staff and community. We are proud to open our doors to students and staff throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and the world, welcoming everyone to learn from one another and contribute to our diverse and flourishing community. The University of Canterbury is a place for everyone.

The university has an undivided focus on people, research, education and engagement to carry us forward to our 150th anniversary and beyond.

UC offers a unique, world-class learning experience that gives UC graduates a competitive edge in an increasingly challenging, dynamic and complex world – UC students graduate with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to make a difference.

The University’s research-active lecturers and academics are committed to deploying their expertise and knowledge, and are active in partnering with others to advance civic purpose and foster public good.
