Event description
A workshop for emerging art writers revisiting the literature on Frances Hodgkins.

About this Event

Join Christina Barton for a three-part workshop revisiting the literature on Frances Hodgkins to explore and unpack different approaches to the artist and her work. The aim of the workshop is to provide emerging art writers with tools to develop responses to the artist and her work and to use this reflexively to understand their own practices. A final session, ‘Re-writing Frances Hodgkins’ (23 November) will be an open forum where the results of the workshop will be tabled and discussed with invited guests, to test, question and model art writing now.

Christina Barton is Director of Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi at Victoria University of Wellington, where she has taught art history since 1995. A respected art historian, writer and curator, Barton has worked at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. She has curated numerous exhibitions, including the major Billy Apple retrospective at Auckland Art Gallery in 2015. Her writing has been published widely, and she has contributed as an editor of journals Antic and Reading Room, and volumes including the collected art writings of Wystan Curnow.

The workshop coincides with the exhibition Frances Hodgkins: European Journeys, on view at Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi through 13 December. Developed and toured by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, European Journeys features more than 65 works by the artist produced between 1901 and 1946, and traces Hodgkins’ creative and peripatetic life through France, Morocco and Spain to her final days in England, examining the influence of location on her development as a painter.

The workshop is limited to 10 participants.

IMPORTANT: Registration for the Monday 2 November session means you are registered for the full 3-day workshop (Monday 2, 9, 16 November, 5 – 7pm) as well as the final open forum event (Monday 23 November, 5 – 7pm). Attendance at all four events is preferred. Please make note of these dates in your calendar!
