About this event

In particular, we will focus on:

  • The importance of supporting students’ technical skills, and methods for addressing and remediating technical difficulties in older students;
  • Teaching spelling;
  • Teaching sentence structures using sentence-combining;
  • Teaching the writing processes, and knowledge about text types and structures;
  • Assessing writing, using a scope and sequence to select powerful learning goals;
  • Key structures in the writing lesson, including modeling, supported writing, and feedback;
  • Routines for successful student self and peer assessment;
  • Writing tasks to extend and inspire students.

Course attendees will receive a copy of Helen's spelling programme, a guide to sentence-combining, and her scope and sequence for teaching composition.

About the presenter, Dr Helen Walls:

Dr Helen Walls is a teacher, professional learning facilitator, and educational researcher, with nineteen year’s experience working in schools. For her doctoral thesis, Helen conducted two empirical studies to investigate best practice methods for the teaching of writing. She has spoken at national conferences and has published with The Australian Journal of Learning Difficulties. Helen is an associate of Cognition Education and Tātai Angitu of Massey University.
