In readiness for the new NCEA Literacy Standards to be introduced in 2024 we are launching a series of workshops based on the successful book Secondary Literacy - A handbook for teachers written by our presenters Dr Jennifer Glenn and Dr Irene Andersen. This workshop will explore how to address learning area literacy and will be particularly helpful for teachers whose primary teaching subject is not English. This workshop will explore how to address learning area literacy through:

  • Using a range of diagnosis tools to identify literacy issues
  • Instructional reading
  • Instructional writing
  • Developing vocabulary
  • Giving and using feedback
  • Literacy for Assessment
  • Literacy in a digital environment.

What to expect

  • One-day professional learning workshop. You will learn about and experience a range of evidence-based literacy approaches.
  • The combined expertise of two leading literacy specialists - Dr Irene Andersen and Dr Jen Glenn
  • The opportunity to network with other educators in your area.

Secondary Literacy: A Handbook for Teachers, Glenn, J. and Andersen, I. is included in the cost of the workshop for participants.

You will develop a deeper understanding of literacy approaches that have been proven to be effective in secondary contexts in Aotearoa NZ.
