Whitecliffe invites all Year 12 & 13 High School Students to enrol in a one-week intensive workshop this July: An Introduction to the Idea of The Body in Art-making”.

This is an oppportunity to:

  • learn new skills

  • work with practicing artists and lecturers

  • gain a contextual understanding of art

  • understand art process: develop a concept, experiment through research and work towards a final artwork

  • students will also have the opportunity to experience the learning environment offered at Whitecliffe


ARTWORK OUTCOMES

By the end of the workshop, students:

  • will have explored different aspects of the body in art

  • will have developed a concept through research and planning, leading to the creation of a final artwork. The final outcome of the workshop will include workbook sketches, draft artworks, research and process documentation in support of a final artwork

  • will take part in a group discussion critique where they will present their visual research and final work


THE BODY

Three main ideas will be explored during the workshop:

  • The Extension of the Body

  • The Artist’s Body

  • The Viewer’s Body

These learning topics will be developed in lectures, hands-on research sessions and a guided tour of the current exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery: The Body Laid Bare.


LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • understand the connection between art history and artmaking

  • experience different processes in art-making

  • understand the importance of research while going through art experimentation

  • create a final artwork

  • take part in a group discussion around the final artworks with the lecturers and fellow students

  • experience tertiary Arts & Design education meet lecturers and current students at Whitecliffe




TIMETABLE

Each day will start with a presentation, followed by research time in Whitecliffe’s Parkyn Library with the lecturers, as well as studio activity. After Lunch, students will continue work in the studio, working on idea generation and planning in discussion with the lecturers.

A gallery visit of the exhibition The Body Laid Bare will provide a broader understanding of idea of The Body in art making. It will also be an opportunity to see in the flesh artworks by Matisse, Lucien Freud, Rodin and other important contemporary artists.

The last day of the workshop will be focused on a group discussion of the final artworks and supporting material and research. The final work should be a culmination of what the students have learned over the course of the workshop. The final work can take the form of one final artwork, or there is the possibility to create a body of work that relate to each other.

A farewell lunch will be organised on the last day of the workshop. This will be an opportunity to mingle with current students and meet lecturers. Whitecliffe staff will also be available to answer questions about Whitecliffe’s academic pathways.


THE LECTURERS

Kelly Pretty - MFA(Hons), PGDipTchg, BVA

Kelly received her Master of Fine Arts at the Elam School of Fine Arts Auckland, she has taught in secondary and tertiary education since 2000, in London and Auckland. She has an extensive exhibition history throughout New Zealand, Europe, and America, with works held in private and public collections including the James Wallace Arts Trust. Kelly has been a part-time lecturer at Whitecliffe since 2012.

Rose Meyer - MFA(Hons)

Rose graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts (First Class Honours) from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2016. Meyer's works have been finalists in The 2015 Wallace Awards (First Runner Up), the 2016 Glaister-Ennor award Barefoot and Thompson Award) and most recently the 2017 New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award (Supreme award winner). Rose has been a lecturer at Whitecliffe since 2012.

Clayton Elliot - Dip Tchg

Clayton has a diploma in teaching majoring in Art and Physical Ed from the University of Canterbury. He has taught in a range of educational institutions including Primary, Secondary School and Polytechnics. In 2003 he gained a diploma in graphic design from NATCOL (Now Yoobee). He has worked in the graphic design industry for the past 13 years as an art director, design studio supervisor and freelance designer. He currently manages a small design company and lectures in design.

Monday 10 will start with a brief Orientation session
