Event description

Description

Sheet mulching is an organic gardening technique designed to suppress weeds, improve your soil health and reduce the need for irrigation.

Tired of pouring endless water and mowing-time into your lawn? Sheet mulching is an easy and inexpensive way to transform parts of your lawn, or other undesired vegetation, into fertile, productive garden beds!

By creating layers of nitrogen-rich greens and carbon matter, over a biodegradable weed-barrier base (hence why sheet mulching is sometimes called "lasagna gardening"), you can maximise the retention of nutrients and moisture in your soil, sit back and allow micro-citizens to decompose before planting summer crops.

Our extremely knowledgable workshop tutor, Richard Main, will guide you through the steps and give a hands-on demonstration at Kelmarna, helping you to learn all the knowledge and practical skills you need to repeat the process at home! You will also receive a handout on all the topics covered to take away with you.

--

Richard Main has considerable gardening expertise gathered through over 40 years gardening experience in a wide range of roles. He is currently the driving force behind Gardens4Health, a Ministry of Health-funded initiative supporting the establishment of sustainable community gardens aimed at increasing physical activity, growing organic food and improving health across Auckland.

--

At Kelmarna, we believe that education should be accessible to everyone, and therefore offer tickets at a 50% discount to Community Services Cardholders. If you book one of these tickets, please bring your Community Services Card to the event.
