Description

The Annual Kippenberger Public Lecture 2018
presented by Professor Dewi Fortuna Anwar

Reception to follow from 7:15pm

'Indonesia and the Indo-Pacific Order'

As the world’s largest archipelagic state with a large and highly diverse population and a developing economy, Indonesia’s foreign policy is primarily driven by domestic dynamics and priorities. Strategically located at the crossroads of the Indo-Pacific region and as the largest country in South East Asia, Indonesia sees ASEAN as the cornerstone of its foreign policy, critical for ensuring harmony between its members and for managing relations with larger external powers. In her 2018 Sir Howard Kippenberger lecture, Professor Dewi Fortuna Anwar will discuss the evolution of Indonesia’s approach to foreign policy, from “sailing between two reefs” during the Cold War to the challenge of “navigating in turbulent oceans” in today’s more complex contemporary global and regional order.

Professor Dewi Fortuna Anwar
Professor Anwar is the Sir Howard Kippenbergere Chair in Strategic Studies 2018. She is one of Indonesia’s leading foreign policy intellectuals and strategic analysts. She is Research Professor at the Centre for Political Studies-Indonesia Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and from 2010 to 2017 served as a senior adviser to Indonesia’s Vice-President Boediono and his successor Vice-President Jusuf Kalla. She has written widely on Indonesian foreign policy as well as the country’s democratization and on a range of ASEAN political and security issues.
