Have you always wanted to learn to hand sew? Textiles designers Deb Donnelly and Jane Bloxham are delighted to be sharing Japanese cultural textiles in both traditional craft and contemporary art forms. Slow stitch allows creative expression for each participant in mindful and sustainable design processes and craft methods.
This three hour workshop is ideal for beginner sewers, quilters, textile artists, hobbyists and contemporary designers. you will be creating a simple layered concept and personal stitched art, based on a choice of pattern templates. You will not only walk away with your very own stitched work but also a renewed appreciation for repairing and sustaining beautiful textiles for different end uses.
Materials and equipment that will be provided:
- each participant will be given the choice of two types of kits that includes a set of small Japanese cultural textiles, a base cloth, specialist fabrics, needle and sashiko thread.
- Scissors, templates and sewing equipment will be provided.
Samples and demonstrations will help support participants to pick up the methods to complete their first piece.
About the tutors:
Deb Donnelly is a textile designer, curator, interdisciplinary visual artist and arts educator. She has lived on the Kāpiti Coast since 2010, managed several enterprises in Pacific based eco-textiles since the1990s and taught in the visual arts field at NZ secondary and tertiary levels since 1990. Deb has a studio where she practices indigo, natural dyeing and shibori shape resist for design and art uses. Deb’s mother Setsuko migrated from Japan to New Zealand in 1950s and handed down a love of making craft for enhancing our well-being.
Jane Bloxham is a fashion designer and technology teacher based in Waikanae. She has managed her own fashion design business making wedding gowns and accessories in the UK and continued this in NZ working with NZ fashion designers. She has been teaching pattern making and construction and textile technology in both tertiary and secondary education in Wellington and Kāpiti since 2003.
