Description

About the film:

Based on a true story, The Idol, is about the incredible and inspiring life journey of Mohammed Assaf, a Palestinian singer who travels from Gaza Strip to compete at Arab Idol in Cairo, Egypt.

Mohammad Assaf is a young man with grand aspirations. A wedding singer from a refugee camp, he dreams of singing in the famed Cairo Opera House before a huge and appreciative audience. But growing up in the densely populated and volatile strip of Gaza, dreams seem more like ants escaping the weather. Determined to share his voice with the world he seeks to infiltrate the hotel where performers are assembling for the current Arab Idol television show. Ready or not, the world will hear Mohammad's voice and in turn open its hearts to his most remarkable talent."

Where will the profits be going?

We are a volunteer organisation. All overheads will be accounted for (venue hire etc) but any net profit will be going back into the Palestine Human Rights Campaign, Waikato (PHRCW) so they can continue their stellar work:

Part of New Zealand Palestine Solidarity Network (PSN), Based in Hamilton, the PHRCW works to raise public awareness of the Palestinian people's struggle to resist Israeli military occupation and Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

We advocate the primacy of international law, the acceptance of which by the Israeli regime must be the basis for the ending of Israeli military occupation and all forms of ethnic discrimination.

We work to raise awareness of the international community's responsibility for upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the urgent need for the state of Israel to be called to account for its gross abuses of Palestinian human rights.

We call for the establishment of a bi-national, secular and democratic state in Palestine/Israel, with full and equal citizenship rights for all. We seek to bring pressure on the New Zealand Government to join the majority of the international community in requiring Israel to:

- Observe all relevant UN Resolutions and Geneva conventions
- Cease ethnic discrimination and territorial annexation
- Abandon its militarism and violence
