The Workshop

CDHB’s Via Innovations team, in conjunction with Te Papa Hauora, ChristchurchNZ and the New Zealand Health Innovation Hub, are sponsoring a fast-paced innovation workshop for Canterbury Health System employees to explore innovative ways to improve our healthcare system using digital technologies.

Following the workshop participants can apply to Via Innovations for further support including one of up to three proof of concept contracts.

The Challenge

What pressing problems in your work area could digital technologies or automation tools potentially:

  • Protect the health workforce and patients by reducing risk of human error
  • Save an hour a day of health workforce time to focus on patient facing activities
  • Improve health equity and access to healthcare for vulnerable people
  • Reduce hospital bed stay days through getting people home earlier and staying well at home
  • Improve patients’ understanding of their own health and how to access advice and services, and

likely echo similar problems experienced in other parts of the health system nationally.

Learn about key factors for successfully working with DHBs to design, test and implement digital innovations.

Network one on one with subject matter experts from within the Canterbury Health System in a fast-paced speed-dating format to :

  • share and develop your idea
  • learn more about the key steps in the journey from concept to successful implementation.

Topics include

  • IT infrastructure, interoperability design and Cloud Risk Assessment processes
  • Design for health equity, Māori data sovereignty and managing bias
  • Privacy impact assessment, ethics and regulations for medical devices and software as a medical device
  • System design thinking methodology for mapping quality improvement ideas
  • Types of data available in the CDHB data warehouse and pathways to access it
  • Government rules of procurement and how the DHB purchases services and products
  • Business case process and business analysis steps
  • Intellectual property considerations and models for co-design with industry
  • Commercial opportunities in DHBs, including through the NZ Health Innovation Hub
  • Clinical governance frameworks and success criteria for implementing eHealth projects in the CDHB.

Workshop Agenda

In a follow-up to the workshop participants and mentors will be invited to share their insights and expertise in short video clips that will become a resource for broader dissemination of innovation insights for others in the health system.

Registration and Eligibility

Applications are welcome from all areas of the Canterbury Health System, from hospital, primary and community care, from clinical and non-clinical areas, from anywhere digital technologies or automation tools could help improve healthcare delivery sustainably.

The workshop is limited to the first fifteen registrations who have confirmed their Line Manager approval to attend, and who have completed the idea registration form which will be supplied by Via Innovations once you register your interest on Eventbrite.

Teams of up to two employees can join together as a single registration.

The Via Innovations team will work through further details with applicants pre-workshop to ensure both you and the subject expert mentors get the most value from the workshop.

If you can't make it on the 5th May, please still register your interest and the Via Innovations team will explore holding additional workshops, and other ways to keep you involved and connected with the outcomes of the workshop.
