Description

Sir Peter Gluckman Addresses Environmental realities at Lincoln University's State of the Nation's Environment Address on Wednesday 20th July

Humans have radically changed the New Zealand environment – with cumulative effects – leading to some complex trade-offs we now need to manage. On one hand we need and desire environmental conservation, yet we remain heavily dependent on pastoral production despite its major impacts on our natural environment. In recent decades, our farming sector has been intensified in a relatively isolated way that has not adequately considered the spill-over costs on many planning decisions. Invasive pests and disease incursions threaten this sector as well as our treasured native species and natural ecosystems. Biosecurity and land use impacts are complex and wide-ranging, and need to be better understood, with decisions underpinned by robust data and modelling.

Indeed, complex policy decisions will be needed, and questions of societal values will need to be addressed. For example, will new life science technologies provide a circuit breaker on the destruction of our environment, or will society remain highly precautionary? Several important policy-relevant papers and goal statements are emerging, all of which point to the need for strategic research and innovative thinking to address the issues we face now, and that will become even more critical in the future.

Gold coin donation to Sir Peter Gluckman's preferred charity Sir Peter Blake Trust would be appreciated.

Please join us for nibbles and drinks afterwards.
