Associate Professor Sandra Billinger received her Master of Science in physical therapy in 2004 and her PhD in Rehabilitation Science in 2008 from the University of Kansas. Since then she has taught in physical therapy and rehabilitation science doctoral programs in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Kanas.

From 2013 through to 2016 Dr Billinger served as chair of the Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Committee and is still a member of the Stroke Council, both of the American Heart Association. She served on the research committee of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary section, was the lead person for the nominating committee of the Neurology Section and is an editorial board member of the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy.

Dr Billinger’s research interests are aimed at examining the cardiovascular and pulmonary changes that occur in people with chronic diseases specifically after stroke. She is interested in understanding the cellular mechanisms that influence vascular function after stroke and how exercise, as a therapeutic intervention may affect vascular health. In this talk Dr Billinger will discuss her current research and the importance of exercise for stroke recovery.
