Sustainability at Auckland District Health Board …our commitment to Papakainga Atawhai

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.

The SDGs are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with addressing a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental degradation.

The 17 goals don’t stand alone but interconnect in order to leave no one behind.

Three thought-provoking and informative panel discussions on the following topics:

Panel 1: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being “to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”.

What’s driving the gaps in our society, the barriers and what collective actions are necessary to achieve the UN Goals

Panel 2: SDG 13 – Climate Action and the Health Sector “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact”

What is the health impact from climate change, what does the health sector need to do to prepare communities for this impact and what does adaptation look like to meet the barriers, challenges to combat climate change going forward

Panel 3: SDG 10 – Eliminating Inequity “reduce inequality within and among countries”

What is the impact of inequity on health and what is the health sector doing to eliminate inequity, the challenges, barriers and what collective action looks like that will eliminate inequity

Papakainga Atawhai is the name gifted by Sir Hugh Kawharu of Ngāti Whātua to the building of Auckland City Hospital on its current site.

Our use of the term Papakainga Atawhai is our way to whakamana (acknowledge) Ngāti Whātua and their gift of the whenua on which Auckland City Hospital stands.

Our commitment is to exhibit environmental responsibility, by having regard to the impact of our work on the environment, in order to secure good health and well-being for the future generations.

The Auckland DHB is currently developing a sustainability framework based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to broaden the scope of activity to include social and economic pillars of sustainability. This sustainability framework will be both transformational and fully integrated into our strategies, plans and service delivery. This will ensure we model best practice in sustainable development and use our influence as a major employer and leader in health in areas such as sustainable procurement and work.

We have commenced our carbon reduction programme with a focus on energy efficiencies, innovation, technology, procurement and waste minimisation strategies. We are building resilience through education and training that will change culture to embrace sustainable practice.

This symposium is to draw on experiences across the region with speakers who are highly respected advocates in their field, provide a shared learning environment that will inspire attendees to take action and work together as part of the wider community to protect and restore natural resources from climate change. As a community we are all responsible to ensure we protect the environment for future generations.

Morning tea refreshments and a light lunch are provided. Please email Tineke Crawford on tinekec@adhb.govt.nz if you require vegetarian or gluten free options.

This symposium is free to attend.

As one of the largest health sector organisations in the country Auckland DHB has arrived at a critical point driven by increased population, increased demand combined with the health impact of climate change.  We are setting an ambitious goal of being carbon neutral by 2050 with the vision “to meet the needs of today without adversely impacting on the needs of the future generation”.

To achieve this we want to build resilience across our organisation and the wider community that has an enduring and lasting effect both socially and environmentally that will benefit the local population in the years to come.   In response to our Treaty of Waitangi responsibilities, we will work closely with our partners to support Māori models of sustainability and to support iwi to exercise kaitiakitanga.  Our philosophy is to leave no-one behind.
