About this event

🌟Taal & Tales – A First-of-Its-Kind Kathak Experience in New Zealand🎶Live Music. Real Stories. Powerful Dance.

We're thrilled to bring you Taal & Tales – a truly special and inaugural Kathak recital in New Zealand, featuring live Indian classical music and storytelling through dance.

This isn’t just a performance—it’s a celebration of our roots, our mythology, and our classical arts coming together on one powerful stage.

🩰What makes this show unique? For the very first time, we’re blending mythological storytelling with live rhythm and classical movement in a full-length Kathak recital. This level of collaboration—between dancers and musicians sharing the stage, responding to each other in real time—has never been done here before.

The stories we’re telling are of four extraordinary women: Radha, Sita, Amba, and Draupadi. Through abhinaya (expression), movement, and rhythm, we’ll explore their strength, struggle, love, and divinity.

🎵The music is completely live, performed by some of the most talented classical musicians in New Zealand, including:

  • Basant Madhur, tabla maestro and the driving force behind classical music in NZ
  • Professor Sukhdev Madhur, a deeply respected name in Indian classical circles in NZ and India.
  • Akhil, Sargam and Kareena, along with students of Sargam School of Indian Music

We are honoured to present poetic introductions to our dance stories, penned by Shri Rajendra Palampuri, one of Himachal Pradesh's most celebrated poets

This production is presented by Sounds of India Charitable Trust and features dancers from the Kathak Dance Company, trained in the Jaipur Gharana under Purnima Garg, who has passionately promoted Kathak across New Zealand for years.

Taal stands for rhythm and technical brilliance in dance.✨ Tales brings forward emotional storytelling from our mythology.Together, they create something truly magical.

🙏 If you love Indian classical music, dance, or just want to experience something deeply cultural, emotional, and artistic—this is the show to see.
