Robyn Peers will investigate portraiture, focusing not just on the likeness of the sitter but on what the background reveals about the sitters portrayed. Beginning with the Renaissance - when realistic depictions of individuals re-emerged in Western art after the classical era - we'll journey through the centuries to the present day.

Along the way, we'll examine how settings, environment, family, possessions and clothes in portraits offer subtle (and not so subtle) clues to the sitter's status, identity, interests and aspirations. What stories do these backgrounds tell? How do they shape the way we understand the person in the frame?

Robyn Peers holds a Master’s degree in Art History from the University of Canterbury. She has taught art at both secondary and tertiary levels and now volunteers her time to support the arts, continuing to share her passion with the wider community.
