Whether you choose to attend just one workshop or all four, this online series is a great way to complete our Te Ao Māori course without having to take a full day off work in one go.

You will learn some basic conversation, vocabulary, and introductory grammar. Greetings and farewells, mihimihi and poroporokai are also a core component of this course. You will also learn how to construct your pēpēha. Finally, the course covers effective strategies for engagement with Māori business and Mātauranga Māori.


Key audience:

This course is suitable for anyone in an organisation who would like to upskill in Māori language pronunciation and tikanga. It would be especially useful for businesses that engage with Māori stakeholders who would like to build more seamless and respectful relationships.

Workshop 1# Fri 14 June, 9am-11am


Identity - self-worth, self-determination, sense of belonging and connectedness, relationships


  • This session is about building and developing confidence around correct pronunciation. This is done by exploring a range of strategies and including listening, enunciation of vowels, breaking words up after the vowel etc.


  • Exploring Identity by way of sense of belonging, connection, relating to the environment, build and growing self-worth and self-determination.

Workshop 2# Fri 21 June, 9am-11am


The World of Maori - Analysing Maori values and principles and exploring Maori etiquette on the marae.


  • Analysing and breaking māori words down into compound words, you get an appreciation of a more detailed and explained version.


  • Te Kawa o te Marae (Pōhiri), is about exploring the roles and responsibilities between manuhiri (guests) and tāngata whenua (hosts) as well as understanding the realms of Tapu (restricted) and Noa (Neutral).

Workshop 3# - Fri 5 July, 9am-11am


What is Maori knowledge?


  • Exploring Mātauranga Māori (Māori Knowledge) by analysing what, why, how we engage in Kawa (Customs), Tikanga (Protocol), Tapu (Restricted), Noa (Neutral), Mana (Integrity/Respect), Whakapapa (Genealogy), Karakia (Incantation), Mauri (Life force),Wairua (Spiritual).

Workshop 4# Fri 12 July, 9am-11am


What is Matariki and why is Matariki important?


  • Exploring and analysing the various "Kaitiaki" "Tipua" and their realms. How do we interact respectfully in those spaces?


  • Matariki (Mata-Ariki) is about understanding that there are three main themes associated to this Kaupapa. Remembrance (acknowledging those who have passed during the year), Celebrating the present (by showing appreciation, joyfulness, positivity , reciprocity), Looking to the future (planning ahead for the new year, setting new goals and aspirations).
