Te Ihi Ora Wānanga

Ki muri ki mua Ka whakaora ai tou haere Using the treasures of the past today, can keep you well.

Te Ihi Ora is a wānanga delivered by Te Rau Matatini as a proactive response alongside Māori to the challenging issue of suicide.

The wānanga draws on an in-depth Te Ao Māori perspective to learning and strategy, is informed and guided by mātauranga Māori and kaumātua and kuia korero, to prevent suicide. The facilitation team, have experience in suicide prevention, mental health and addiction treatment with Māori.

The wānanga is free and available to frontline staff and whānau who want to promote oranga Māori and learn more about protective factors to prevent suicide.

Facilitators

  • Ronald Baker (Ngāti Porou, Te Aitanga a Hauiti, Ngai Tamanuhiri, Rongomaiwahine) - currently employed as Kaumatua for Te Rau Matatini. Registered Psychiatric Nurse of 35 years Ronald’s commitment has been to establishing and enhancing Kaupapa Māori services and practice in several Iwi rohe. Most recent practice in the intensive community teams of the northern regions.
  • Koromiko Richards (Ngāti Whatua, Hauraki)

There are eight Te Ihi Ora Wānanga to be delivered throughout the country:

  1. 24 Jan - Hiruharama Marae, Ruatoria
  2. 26 Jan - Gisborne at Waikanae Surf Club
  3. 02 Feb - Waitangi at the Scenic Hotel in Paihia
  4. 12 Feb - Taranaki at Tui Ora in New Plymouth
  5. 06 Mar - Porirua, venue TBC
  6. 20 Mar - Murihiku at Toi Mai Rangi Marae
  7. 22 Mar - Otautahi at Ngā Hau e Wha Marae
  8. 06 Jun - Hawkes Bay at Te Tai Whenua o Heretaunga
