Event description

Description

We had such a great time at our inaugural Conservation Communicators Hui that we have decided to do it all again in Dunedin.

Our native species and their habitats are under threat. Yet three-quarters of New Zealanders think the environment is doing okay. As conservation communicators, we have an opportunity to engage people with conservation and encourage them to take action.

Our two-day hui aims to up-skill people working in conservation communication. We’ll hear from expert speakers, break into discussion groups, and run workshops. By bringing together iwi, government, volunteers, scientists, and NGOs, we hope to facilitate learning, discussion and create stronger networks within our community

Themes

Kanohi te kanohi

As technology continues to shape how we interact, engage, and learn, what does this mean for influencing behaviour change at the human level? Literally meaning face to face, kanohi te kanohi embodies meaningful, human interaction, whether it be presentations, guiding, or daily conversation.

Greening the screen

How do we, as conservation communicators, bring the majesty and awe of the natural world into a digital medium? Where attention spans are shorter than a pekapeka’s tail, we’ll explore what can make conservation stand out.

The science of storytelling

With a subject grounded in observation, data collection, and analysis, how do we make conservation science sing? Storytelling is an essential part of conservation communication, where art and emotion weave its way into logic and reason.
