Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative will be running a volunteer scientific snorkeller workshop to help train community volunteers to monitor Te Kohuroa reef and assist with kelp restoration activities throughout the summer season.
The workshop will include an online theory session (~1.5hrs) prior to the event covering snorkelling safety, survey methodology and species ID, as well as a practical snorkel component at Te Kohuroa/Matheson Bay.
This event is funded by the Auckland Council, Foundation North and Bobby Stafford Bush Foundation.

9.30 am - 10.00 am – Welcome, karakia, whakawhanaungatanga and H&S briefing
10.00 am - 10.30 am – Introduction to Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative
10.30am - 11.00am - Fish ID practice and breath hold exercises
11.00 am – 11.15am Break
11.15 am - 1.15 pm - Basic scientific snorkelling skills practice (in water)
1.15 pm - 1.45 pm - Lunch
1.45 pm - 3.00 pm - Fish abundance and kelp/kina density survey demonstrations/practice (in water)
3.00 pm - 4.00 pm - Debrief, ecological observations survey and packdown

Registrations (essential for all participants)
Minimum age for the activity is 12 years old, children 15 years and below need to have an adult supervisor present. Prior snorkelling experience and strong swimming ability is required.
Bring your own gear or get free hire of our mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuits. Experienced guides and advanced safety procedures will be in place on the day.
