About this Event

Energy Transitions – the power of technology

Our next Tech Tuesday Forum for this year focuses on Energy Economics during which Professor Basil Sharp, from the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Business and Economics, will highlight the need for policy certainty, profitable investment, and innovation that leverages off New Zealand’s comparative advantage.

Over time energy transitions have occurred in response to a demand for a service; or, the need to address the spill-overs associated with energy use. Scientists need no reminding of the first law of thermodynamics. Technology delivers us with a service that we value and by-products that we don’t particularly want to live with. Today, we face the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions as suggested by the Climate Change Commission. The race to decarbonize economies is on.

Join us in the Newmarket Campus Seminar Room on Tuesday 4 May from 5.30pm for nibbles and networking, followed by Professor Sharp's presentation.

Professor Basil Sharp is Energy Education Trust of New Zealand Professor of Energy & Resource Economics and Director of The Energy Centre. His research interests span the field of energy and resource economics, economics of the environment, and law and economics. He has a specific interest in the application of economics and econometric methods to contemporary resource and environmental problems. His current research focuses on renewable energy, contract design under uncertainty, rights based systems of governance and spatial modelling.
