Event description

Description

Get crafty in honour of the wonderful women who have paved the way for us! Any teens who are 12 or older are invited to take part in this Teen Takeover.

We'll create fabric panels to send to Wellington as part of the Vinnies Resew ‘Suffrage in Stitches’ project that “celebrates the lives of women who signed the suffrage petition in 1893 and women in the subsequent 125 years.”

We’ll get creative with fabric, embroidery thread and textiles to create panels to honour wonderful women, starting with Huria Matenga, who bravely saved sailors’ lives in rough seas in 1844 at Delaware Bay and Constance Barnicoat, whose intelligence and adventuring spirit were renowned. All materials will be provided.

The panels will be sent to Wellington, where they will be stitched together with other groups’ panels to create a textile remembrance that is 274 metres long (the length of the original petition), with 546 panels (the number of pages in the petition) and 25, 521 hand stitches (the number of votes cast).

There is space for 12 teens to take part in this workshop.
