  • Associate Professor Russel Pears– will talk about two challenging case study scenarios that test the limits of current capabilities in machine learning.
  • William Caicedo (PhD Student) - will talk about Deep Learning for prediction with explanation capacity.

Nikola Kasabov isthe Director of the Knowledge Engineering and Discovery Research Institute (KEDRI) at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). He holds a Chair of Knowledge Engineering at the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences at AUT. Nikola is Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Fellow of the NZ Institute of IT Professionals NZ, Distinguished Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Scottish Computer Society, UK.

Dave Parry is the academic leader for the Masters in Health Informatics Programme at AUT. He has a strong interest in Machine Learning and is currently involved in several projects in this area. Originally from Wales, Dave has lived in New Zealand for the last 16 years. He started work as a Medical Physicist and moved across to software development for healthcare and non-healthcare applications. Dave worked at the Department of Information Science, University of Otago 1997-2000 on the world's first online teaching course in health informatics and from 2000 has worked at AUT initially as a software developer and researcher in online learning and subsequently as an academic.

Russel Pears holds a Bachelors degree in mathematics and physics, and masters and PhD degrees in computing science from the University of Cardiff, United Kingdom. Russel is an Associate Professor at the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the Auckland University of Technology, where he teaches Data Mining and Research methods.

William Caicedo is a PhD candidate at AUT School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences under the supervision of A/Professor Jairo Gutierrez and A/Professor Dave Parry. His research involves the use of Deep Learning in medicine. Specifically, William works in the application of Deep Neural Networks to the prediction of patient mortality inside the Intensive Care Unit. William Received a BSc in Computer Science and a MSc in Engineering from Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar (Colombia). He was awarded a PhD scholarship from AUT’s School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences in 2017.
