THE CONTRACT - Term 4 Evening Course with Toby Raine
Tue, 20/09/2016, 6:00 PM – Tue, 1/11/2016, 9:00 PM NZST
"The Contract: Reinventing Representation" is a painting course designed for beginners/Intermediate student by artist Toby Raine, which will challenge your art practice.
A tendency in painting can be to move from one idea, method or source of inspiration to the next without giving much consideration to the result and its success or lack thereof. The aim of this course is to increase your knowledge and expertise in relation to your independent practice through in depth exploration of how specific images might be translated or reinvented through processes of painting.
You will enter into a contract, the terms being that you pick one image of your own desire to last the duration of the project/course. This image will be your sole “blueprint” or starting point from which a body of various paintings in both the form of studies and resolved works should emerge. This commitment to one image encourages you to develop a multi-faceted approach to any one source of information. By pushing and testing the limitations of your contract you will evolve your painting knowledge through innovation, experimentation and versatility.
An operative term to keep in mind when approaching your contract is “How might I paint this?”. In other words, each time you approach your image is a clean slate and an opportunity to completely reinvent the rules. Whether the various results of your contract present as obvious figurations, patterns or wholly abstract elements, the important thing to remember is that rather than inhibiting your growth the contact is in place to enable you to open the door to possibility. Like a legally binding document you must find ways to bend and shape your agreement to your own advantage and self-growth
Note from the Tutor:
Given the experimental nature of the course, students will find the larger number of things they work on the better they will progress. It is therefore encouraged that each student produces a minimum of two further works/studies between each weekly session. Students are encouraged from the start to “let go” and not be afraid of doing the “wrong thing”. For many students this will mean doing things differently from how they are used to and accepting that there will be messy moments. (consider this when referring to materials list).
The 6 weeks course will run over 7 weeks from Tuesday evening the 20th of September to Tuesday the 1st of November (NO CLASS ON 11 OCTOBER)
Each class will start at 6pm and finish at 9pm.
About Toby Raine:
Toby Raine is currently in the final stages of his Doctorate of Fine Arts at Auckland University where he has taught painting and drawing at various levels for the past four years. Toby’s Doctoral thesis examines contemporary painting as a strange and compulsive occupation, adopting a ritualistic approach in the studio that is simultaneously experimental and respectfully reflective of painting’s history.
