Event description
Join us for an evening with one of New Zealand's most respected economic economists Tony Alexander.

About this Event

A few points Tony will be covering are:

  • Why have prices risen so strongly recently and can they keep going up at this pace?
  • By historical standards, prices in Canterbury are still relatively low compared with the national average. Is the much-talked about period of price "catch-up" almost upon us?
  • An improving world growth outlook means inflationary pressures are set to rise. This has pushed bank fixed borrowing costs up strongly in recent weeks. Will fixed mortgage interest rates rise this year and will the Reserve Bank push floating rates higher earlier than their signal of 2023-2024?
  • Moves are being made by the government and Reserve Bank to suppress investor demand for existing properties. What impact will likely rule changes have?

About Tony Alexander:

"I've spent three decades back in NZ since the 1980s writing more about the NZ economy than anyone else in NZ history, and in the past two decades have delivered 80-120 presentations each year around NZ and offshore. My audience has always been the average home buyer and property investor, plus small to medium-sized businesses.

The thing I'm best at is speaking and writing in a language people can understand. What I do is less about forecasting what is coming than explaining underlying trends in the economy and what they imply for home buyers, businesses, and investors. "
