Why is emotional intelligence so important to leadership?

In today’s business world of hyper-activity which continually demands an ‘always on’ and ‘always striving for excellence’ mentality, leaders now need to be equipped with new skills and capabilities to lead collaborative, high performing teams in order to deliver on their business objectives. It’s not an easy feat and requires a significant amount of time, effort and focus. The good new is Emotional intelligence (EI) unlike Cognitive intelligence of IQ can be developed overtime and research has shown that managers who have developed these skills achieve higher performance and success both personally and professionally. And team’s who are led by managers with these skills also achieve far greater performance. Foundational to developing a leaders EI is the development of focus, attention and compassion for self and others, these are the skills developed by mindfulness practices and researched extensively by neuroscientists for their extraordinary benefits.
