The Great Christchurch Technology Cooking Challenge. A design and cooking competition for students in the Greater Christchurch region.

About this event

2021 FOOD CHALLENGE

  • Entry requirements
  • Students must be in Years 7 or 8.
  • Teams must have 3 or 4 members.
  • Individual schools can enter a maximum of 4 teams.
  • Up to 4 photos can be uploaded at the end of the night.
  • You need an adult who is responsible for overseeing food safety.
  • You should have a camera and computer ready to prepare and upload your entries.

TIP - Because we are not able to taste your food, the judging is completed based on the quality of the photographs. You should research food photography and be prepared to take quality photos.

Rules

  • The Mystery box must remain sealed until the judges say go on the night.
  • No preparation allowed until after the 10 minutes planning time is completed, this will begin following the judges briefing at 4pm.
  • You can use an iPad, or computer to search ideas as well as bring some recipes from home.
  • Following the10 minutes planning you will have 1 hour 30 minutes to complete the cooking. You will have a further 15 minutes to upload your entries.
  • You may preheat your oven prior to the competition starting.
  • You may use any of the ingredients in the pantry list below.
  • You may supply one ingredient per participant valued at $3 or less.
  • You must use at least 8 of the 10 ingredients in the mystery box.
  • You can only use the equipment specified in the equipment list unless agreement is given by the judges.

Brief

The brief will be determined closer to the time and notified to teams the week prior to the competition.

Pantry (you should aim to have a basic pantry available for each team on the night). Below is the recommended pantry list for 2021

  • Flour 1 kg
  • Sugar 1 kg
  • Butter 250 g
  • Eggs 6
  • Milk 1 Litre
  • Cream 375 ml bottle
  • Cocoa
  • Baking powder/soda
  • Yeast
  • Seasoning - a selection of herbs and spices
  • Salt
  • A selection of sauces
  • Cooking oil
  • Onion x 1

Equipment (You should have these items available for the night as well as any equipment they may need to plate and stage the photos)

  • Pots
  • Pans
  • Oven dish/tray
  • Bowls
  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping boards
  • Measuring spoons/cups
  • Mixing gear/hand beater/wooden spoon/blender
  • Microwave, oven, stovetop
  • Cooking (lifter, tongs, forks etc)
  • Baking paper
  • You may also use one of the following:
  • Donut machine
  • Waffle machine
  • Crepe maker

Students can plan possible ideas in advance but all food preparation and cooking must be done on the night.

Each school is responsible for ensuring suitable hygiene standards are maintained throughout the competition.
