Event description
The Great Christchurch Technology Cooking Challenge. A design and cooking competition for students in the Greater Christchurch region.

About this event

This competition is open to Year 7 & 8 students from the greater Christchurch area.

  1. It will be run online from 4-6 pm on Thursday 8th September.
  2. Students need to be in teams of 3-4 students
  3. A zoom / microsoft Teams link will be required throughout the event
  4. A maximum of 4 teams can be entered from each school
  5. Students will need access to the pantry and equipment as detailed below
  6. All other materials will be provided prior to the event in a "Mystery Box"
  7. The Mystery box must remain sealed until judges say go on the night
  8. No preparation is allowed until the 10 minutes preparation time is completed, this will begin following the judges briefing at 4 pm
  9. You can use an iPad, or computer to search ideas as well as bring some recipes with you from home


The brief will be determined closer to the time and notified to teams the week prior to the competition.

You will be able to use any ingredients in the agreed pantry that will be notified the week prior to the competition. Additionally, each participant may bring one extra ingredient per participant from home (worth no more than $3 each item). You must also use at least 7 of the 10 ingredients in the mystery box in your final presentation. You can only use the equipment specified in the equipment list unless an agreement is given by the judges.

Your entry will include:

  1. A photo of your meal (you should research and plan how you will present and photograph your finished meal). You can create props in advance.
  2. A Menu Board type description (Max 50 words) - to be pasted as text into the entry form)
  3. A list of all ingredients used (to be pasted as text into the entry page)
  4. Sensory tester evaluation. An adult to taste and give approval

Your entry, including the four things shown above, will need to be submitted to the entry link by 6 pm on the night. You will need to allocate someone to manage the photos and writing tasks as shown above.

Pantry (you should aim to have a basic pantry available for each team on the night) . Below is the pantry list from 2020, we will notify the suggested pantry the week prior to the event.

  • Sugar 1 cup
  • Butter ½ a block
  • Eggs 2-4
  • Milk ½ litre
  • Cocoa
  • Baking powder
  • Yeast
  • Seasonings - herbs/spices
  • Salt
  • Cheese (100g max)
  • Sauce/s

Equipment (You should have these items available for the night as well as any equipment they may need to plate and stage the photos)

  • Pots
  • Pans
  • Oven dish/tray
  • Bowls
  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping boards
  • Measuring spoons/cups
  • Mixing gear / hand beater / wooden spoon
  • Microwave, oven, stovetop
  • Baking paper

Students can plan possible ideas in advance but all food preparation and cooking must be done on the night.

Each school is also responsible for ensuring suitable hygiene standards are maintained throughout the competition.
