About The Frank Burkitt Band
The Frank Burkitt Band consists of a 5 piece string band with Singer Songwriter Frank Burkitt on lead Vocals and Guitar, Kara Filbey on backing Vocals, James Geluk on Bass, Cameron Dusty Burnell on Mandolin and Krissy Jackson on Fiddle. Playing a range of contemporary Bluegrass and original songwriting songs Frank draws on his Celtic Heritage fused with American musical traditions to create his own unique sound.
Frank Burkitt has been performing as a singer songwriter and guitarist for over 10 years. He learned his craft in the late night pub sessions of his native Edinburgh and his debut album ‘a little less care’ was highly praised following tours of the UK, New Zealand and Australia back in 2008-2009. He was accompanied by the highly acclaimed Australian duo of Chris Stone (Fiddle) and Holly Downes (Double Bass).
‘Burkitt’s songs revealed his sure-handed melodic facility, allied to skilful word craft and an attractive voice, whose understated balance of softness and sinew variously recalled James Taylor, Josh Ritter and Dougie MacLean. His performance affirmed him as a singularly promising talent’. Sue Wilson, The Scotsman.
It highlighted Burkitt’s intelligent song writing and clearly drew influence from the contemporary Scottish folk music that had surrounded him in his early years.
More recently he toured North-East America, promoting his 2011 album ‘Valley of Gold’, an album inspired largely by the beauty which struck Burkitt whilst touring New Zealand. This album was evidence of Burkitt’s music starting to move away from Scottish Folk and more towards American Roots music such as blues, country and contemporary bluegrass.
‘Burkitt – backed by his four-piece band – hollered, crooned and generally swooned his merry way through a plethora of footstomping ditties.’ Edinburgh Evening News.
In early 2014 Burkitt relocated to Wellington and was quick to form ‘The Frank Burkitt Band’ which include Cameron Dusty Burnell (Mandolin), Krissy Jackson (Fiddle), Kara Filbey (Backing Vocals and Percussion) and James Geluk (Double Bass). They have been impressing audiences across New Zealand since their debut performance at the Wellington Bluegrass Society in September 2014. Their eagerly anticipated first album ‘Fools and Kings’ will be released in November 2015 and the band will embark on a National NZ Tour in Nov/Dec 2015 to promote the record.
“Original material sung with clarity and emotion, a fantastic live folk singer with a very talented band of musicians.” Sonicbids.com
Burkitt’s music is not confined to one genre. However, it has a very unique sound and feel at its core. Although heavily influenced by blues, country, bluegrass, swing and Scottish folk – it is good old fashioned song writing that has really underpinned his musical career. Intelligent and thought provoking lyrics are served up alongside music that is as emotive as it is foot-tapping.
“Frank Burkitt with a clear load of experience and nightclub savvy in his style. With strong songs and musicianship, his easy listening camaraderie lifted the evening to foot tapping entertainment with a wry sense of humour and professional patter.” Theatreview.org.nz
