About this event

Technology needs purpose, so let’s give it one.

We’ve entered the decade for sustainability action. We have clear challenges to overcome and fortunately we now have incredible tools available to help us respond more swiftly and holistically than ever before. Join us to learn how we can use tech, for good.

This session is designed for:

Anyone who has a desire to make positive change and is interested in how technology can help scale-up and amplify effort.

Whether your organisation is just starting out on a sustainability journey or is already making progress, it's important to understand the role disruptive technologies like the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence or Extended Reality can play. Not only can technology deliver better efficiencies, it can provide deeper insight, support wider engagement and expedite response to pressing challenges.

This hands-on workshop is a great way to open up conversations about how technology can support the sustainability goals of your organisation.

Overview:

The previous decade of digital transformation has delivered massive advancements in connectivity, information sharing and efficiency. In this decade we need to apply that same development effort to expedite solutions to meet global sustainability goals.

In Aotearoa today, we have the opportunity to develop technology solutions that deliver on the ‘for good’ purpose, meeting our sustainability goals and transforming our global economic offering.

To do that, we need to reframe how we think about technology in the context of sustainability.

This is a hands-on workshop to bring together logical and creative thinking and work on how disruptive technologies in organisations can be used as a powerhouse for positive change.

How the workshop will run:

First, you’ll be introduced to disruptive technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, digital twins and autonomous technologies.

Then you’ll be challenged to rethink what ‘value creation’ really means, and reframe the role of business as a force for good within society and our environment.

Our special guest speaker is Michelle Impey from Save the Kiwi. Michelle will talk about how technology is already being used to track, manage and protect our national taonga.

Then it’s your turn. In groups, you’ll ideate ways to repurpose the technology solutions Save the Kiwi is employing to another sustainability challenge - as a group you can choose the focus: environmental, societal or economic. You’ll map out a stakeholder view of the technology impact to get a broad perspective of the pros and cons.

In your groups, you’ll present your idea for feedback and discussion.

The content covered in this workshop will give you a taster of the skills and knowledge learners build on three of our innovative postgraduate programmes: Leading Change for Good, Disruptive Technologies and the Internet of Things for Sustainability. It’s an ideal way to get a sneak peek of how The Mind Lab and Tech Futures Lab support learning that’s future-focused, interconnected and applied.

Why tech for good? Why now?

Digital transformation is underway. Yet if we fail to take a sustainable holistic approach to the transformation, we risk perpetuating the same issues we already face. The sustainability goals are clear, disruptive technologies are maturing, let’s bring them together to rethink our world from here on out.

All ticket sales will be donated to Save the Kiwi.
