Event description

Description

Hosted by broadcaster Wallace Chapman, the format is simple – a guest is invited to choose an object playlist – selecting six objects that are important to them. The interview will plot a course around the conversation their selection catalyses.

Chapman will interview a range of guests over the series providing insights into how the world can be seen and understood through material culture. Our next guest is Nanette Cameron, one of Aotearoa’s preeminent interior designers
. Nanette Cameron was recently honoured with the first ever lifetime achievement award at the 2019 Interior Awards. Her courses began in 1967 and in 1975 became the Nanette Cameron School of Interior Design.

Nanette was a founding member, and is now an honorary member, of the Designers Institute of New Zealand. In 2004 Nanette was awarded a Queens Service Medal for her contribution to her community, and the year prior the exhibition Nanette Cameron Objectspace Master of Craft and book Nanette Cameron: Interior Design Legend recognised her achievements and legacy as an industry icon.

Hospitality will be provided by our incredible partners Amano, Black Estate and Liberty Brewing. This event is part of the Festival of Architecture.

--

Nanette graduated with a Home Science degree from Otago University in 1945 and after teaching at Takapuna Grammar, she sailed to Europe to learn interior design by osmosis as there was no degree in Australasia. On returning she joined the staff at Hurdleys Interior Design in High Street. In the 1960’s when many women didn’t even have access to a cheque book, Nanette started teaching interior design night classes in Glen Innes. These classes became life changing for the women who attended them, as Nanette taught not only the history and principals of design, but also self-confidence and independence. One of the drives in her teaching has always been the belief that if you educate a woman you educate a family.

Wallace Chapman is a broadcaster and host of top rating show The Panel on RNZ National. For five years prior to that he was host of Sunday Morning with Wallace Chapman, and hosted the ‘pub politics’ TV show Backbenches for 10 years until 2018. Chapman has a personal interest in the arts…specifically NZ artists, both emerging and established.
