About Joe

The Honourable Justice Sir Joseph Williams (Ngāti Pūkenga, Waitaha and Tapuika) became a partner at Kensington Swan in 1992 and went on to co-found Walters Williams & Co in 1994. During this time he established a fine reputation working in the Treaty claims area on behalf of iwi claimant groups.

He became Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court in 1999 and was appointed Deputy Chairperson of the Waitangi Tribunal shortly after in 2000. He was made Chairperson of the Waitangi Tribunal in 2004 and was appointed a judge of the High Court in September 2008, a judge of the Court of Appeal in February 2018, and was the first Māori appointed judge of the Supreme Court in May 2019. He says it was a great privilege to receive this honour.

Joe whakapapa’s to Ngati Pukenga who are one of the three iwi of Tauranga Moana.

"Not as a reflection of any personal attributes but because of what it says about the mana of this country's highest court and the leadership role that judges appointed to it must play in applying and shaping the law of Aotearoa."
