Lecture synopsis

Right-shifting: seeking a plan to become active in Indigenising legal education in Aotearoa New Zealand

Drawing on the work of Māori language revitalisation strategists, this address applies the ZePA model to make a case for right-shifting zero from passive to the active transformation of legal education. The increasing recognition of the value of Māori law means we need to carefully think through and work out how Māori law ought to be taught as a compulsory part of the LLB degree to support the new demands and opportunities facing the legal profession to have a more tikanga based component. Legal education will need to evolve in order to live up to the challenges that Lex Aotearoa (New Zealand’s unique jurisprudence) will demand of us. This address reinforces the work being led by Māori law academics across the country calling for a right-shift towards a bicultural, bilingual, bijural legal.
