Event description
Learn to make your own potting mix, and transplant your seedlings from seed raising mix into potting mix. (Women only event)

About this Event

Book your space to come and learn how to transplant seedlings and make your own potting mix. Spring is just around the corner, and now is a good time to start getting your supplies together, and planting a few hardy crops while the weather is still a bit chilly.

A lot of traditional gardeners will scatter seed directly in the garden, and then prick out a lot of the plants, to leave space for what's required. I work a little differently. I do my utmost to save every single little baby plant, and transfer them into growing boxes to get big enough to put out into the garden.

This is a great session to come to if you've already started your own seeds and want to bring them along for the next stage. Some groups love sharing with each other, so have a think about how much of what you've grown is excess, and what you need to keep for your own space. I'll have a few trays with me, so if you haven't started your own seeds, please still come along and learn this method.

Thanks to Yotam Kay at Pakaraka Permaculture for teaching me this at a Home Gardening workshop in Thames way back in 2017 - I LOVE this method of growing. The only thing I've altered to what I learned is the DIY potting mix, and the use of biodynamic preparations in my soil.

Bonus: Each attendee will receive a ticket for the online Foodscaping course, valued at $25.

Not included: The supplies for a starter kit range from $10 to $80, depending on how much you want to grow and if you want top quality soil. Choose on the day, book a kit ahead of the session, or bring your own supplies from home.

Each week of gardening at the Women's Centre will include a garden tour, with advice on how to tend an edible garden at this time of year. There are often seeds to collect, plants to divide, cuttings to take.

It's a delightful venue, one of my most favourite gardens in Auckland. I am sure you will feel right at home - while we're there gardening you can make yourself a cup of tea, pick up some flyers on the courses on offer, and check out the calendar of social events.

Through the spring I will teach a few modules from my edible gardening curriculum - pick the topics that suit your interests, or come along each week for the company, get your questions answered, and shop for extra plants and tools from my mobile shop. I don't put anything on a courier, so this is a great chance to order seedlings or seed-raising mix.

Items for sale for this session will include:

  • microgreen starter kits
  • seed raising mix to grow your own food at home (bring a bucket)
  • wooden seed trays (limited supply)
  • coconut coir, pumice sand, sifted compost (bring a bucket)
  • stainless steel buckets

Note: This will be postponed in the case of wet weather. Refunds need to be requested before the session is scheduled to start, otherwise the session will be recorded as an online session via zoom.
