Description

In response to recent events around COVID-19 we will continue to make sure our participants, our facilitators, and our communities are safe, and we may postpone our Mental Health First Aid training if needed.

Ticket entitles you to attend both days of Mental Health First Aid training.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a two-day workshop, that looks at how you can awhi (support) someone who is experiencing mental health concerns. It is designed to include Tikanga and Te Reo Maaori, where possible.

Mental illness topics covered are – Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis & Substance misuse

Mental health crisis topics covered are - Suicidal thoughts and behavior, Panic attacks, severe psychotic states, severe effects from alcohol or drug misuse & Aggressive behavior.

What will you learn?

You will learn skills to awhi a person with a mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis. Learn a five step action plan to awhi whaanau until the crisis settles or professional support is received.

Who should attend this workshop?

Anyone over 18 years of age interested in learning how to give mental health first aid.

During this workshop, you will learn the MAURI five steps action plan:

- Make an assessment of the risk of suicide or self-harm
- Attentive, non-judgmental listening
- Understand and give reassurance and informationRemember to encourage the person to get appropriate professional help/awhi
- Inform them of self-help/awhi strategies

The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) program is an internationally validated program and is delivered by our accredited facilitators.

Please note, this course is not a therapy or support group. It is an education workshop where you will learn how to give mental health first aid to those in need.

Who can attend a MHFA course?

This course is provided free of charge to any adult 18+ living within the Counties Manukau DHB district. If you don't live within the Counties Manukau DHB district and would like to attend please contact 021 892 789 or email mhfa@middlemore.co.nz.

Please note - you must attend both days to receive your certificate of completion.
