Event description

Description

Research has consistently demonstrated the role of the positive treatment alliance in effective healing practices. Yet, the emotional demands of the field, combined with everyday stressors and distractions, can prevent practitioners from being fully present with their clients, which makes it difficult to build and maintain a stable alliance.

This training is a much-needed guide to understanding and cultivating a positive treatment or therapeutic presence. Participants will develop a theoretical and experiential understanding of the role of presence, and learn how to cultivate a combination of presence and self-compassion in their own lives and teach it to clients.

Treatment / Therapeutic presence lies at the heart of a positive healing alliance. It provides a neurophysiological sense of safety in clients that allows them to be seen, heard, understood, and to feel felt. Clients benefit from their practitioner’s presence and compassion because our nervous systems are constantly resonating and trading information bi-directionally with one another. Clients also experience their practitioner’s presence and compassion as a secure base from which to explore their life challenges. It is transtheoretical, as being present optimizes the impact of interventions across different treatment approaches.

In this workshop you will learn how to

  • Ground your whole being with power, grace and availability, particularly in testing circumstances

  • Activate both hemispheres of your brain for higher performance, empathy and creativity

  • Understand the science and neurophysiology behind treatment / therapeutic presence

  • Use self-compassion practices for building resilience for difficult times

  • Explore your story about yourself as a professional and its impact on your presence

  • Use perspective and languaging to assist clients to be safely present to their experience

  • Explore who it is that is present, what they are present to and the implications of physicality

What to expect:

Since presence and self-compassion need to be directly experienced to be understood, this immersive workshop will be largely experiential including meditation, interactive psychodynamic activities, short presentations and group discussion. Participants will receive instructions to a variety of practices that can be used at home, and also taught to clients, students, and trainees. No prior specialist knowledge is required to participate in this workshop.

Who is this training for?

This transtheoretical workshop is suitable for anyone who works in a care-giving, healing or therapeutic relationship with others, including

Health care providers: nurses, doctors, midwifes, physio's etc

Wellbeing providers: life coaches, counsellors, psychologists, mental health workers etc

Previous Participant Feedback

‘Liz brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to her workshop on ‘Presence’. In her calm conscious manner she went through several different practical techniques that really paint clear pictures for every practitioner around how present they are actually being and how important maintaining separation is. This then led into an exploration around self-care both within and without the consulting room, followed by updates on new theories. Thanks Liz for a really beneficial and engaging day, I really enjoyed as always your keen sense of humour and compassion and recommend your workshop to all." Barb Starke EFT and Matrix Practitioner

"This was a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening day. Liz brought a wealth of clinical experience and explained new concepts in a clear and consise manner, ensuring we all grasped the essence and application of the processes and theory. The exercises were very effective in illustrating and anchoring the new learning, and made a lasting impression for me. I highly reccomend this workshop to other psychologists, counsellors and health care providers." Terry McKain, Head of Guidance, Auckland Grammar.

"WOW! Liz sure pulled the rabbit out of the hat with this workshop. The exercises were totally engaging, and really gave meimportant insight into my role as a specialist oncology nurse. I work with clients in life threatening situations everyday, who are often very stressed and frightened. What I learnt at this workshop will really help me be a better helper for them. So very grateful I came!" Shirley St John, Specialist ONcology Nurse, NYC
