Event description
This workshop brings in skills and tools taken from psychotherapy and behavioural therapies, to provide a healing & resilience tool kit.

About this event

The 'Understanding racial trauma' workshop is back! In case you missed our run of this earlier in February this year, we are back for another chance to catch this psychoeducational and tools- based workshop.

This offers a safe space to explore the complexities, psychology and importance of looking at racial and cultural trauma. We will use what has already been uncovered about trauma treatment to build resilience through using various coping skills adapted from behavioural therapies.

You will:

  • Learn about trauma through a racial and cultural context
  • Recognize the affects, behaviours and symptoms of racial and cultural trauma
  • Practice skills and exercises used to treat the affects of trauma
  • Build a small set of skills to continue using when you need to outside the workshop
  • Be a part of a collective community within the workshop

You don’t need any experience in mental health to attend this workshop, just an open mind and some curiosity.

This workshop is best suitable for:

Those affected by racial and cultural issues. Those affected by issues advocated by the Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate movements. Those who have curiosities, shame and other feelings about their 'difference' or 'minority' status. Those who find it hard to explore these issues to others without judgment, dismissal or conflict. Those who want to celebrate their non-Eurocentricity. Anyone experiencing 'activist burnout'

* This live workshop will be hosted and recorded on Zoom.

* You will receive a Zoom link twice: once a day before the scheduled time and again approx. 30 minutes beforehand- Please check your Junk/Spam mail!

* A link to the recording of the workshop will be sent out to all participants after the live workshop. This will be available to view for 1 week. After this, the link will no longer be valid.

* This event will be held at 9pm UK time/8am NZT. Please check before booking that this event is listed in your time zone.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic this workshop will be donation-based, with an understanding that mental health support is crucial at the moment, it's also important for support to remain affordable to all. I do recommend a donation of £20 / 40 NZD for this psyched workshop, however please feel comfortable with paying what you can.

About the host

Understanding racial trauma - and - ways to heal image

Kia ora, my name is Tanisha. I identify as a racialized black female of Caribbean and European heritage, born and raised in the UK where I originally trained in Art Psychotherapy. Currently living in New Zealand, I work with a large range of individuals from Maori, Pasifika, African, Middle Eastern and pakeha clients in-person. I also facilitate counselling work online with clients from all over the world, most of whom are in need of a therapist that can offer a safe, creative and comfortable space to explore issues around racial and cultural identity. My clients, along with my own passions and experiences about this subject, are the reason I have decided to create these workshops.
