Event description

Description

You only have one chance to tell the admissions office your story. Do you know what you’re going to say?

Many students think the essays are the hardest part of the applications. That it largely comes down to what you say in and how well your write your application essays. The truth is, the top mistakes we see students making (which results in rejection or waitlisting) are more fundamental than that! They stem from:

  1. Not understanding the concept of “best fit” (or, why their dream school is their dream school) and,

  2. Not tailoring their entire application in very targeted ways to appeal to that school(s).

In this workshop, Crimson Education’s consultants will show (not just tell) you how to put your best foot forward, using examples from our successful students - many of whom have gained admission to top schools like Yale, Oxford, and UPenn - and examples we know from students who were rejected. This includes not just essays, but other key components of the applications such as the teachers’ letters of recommendation, the activities list, and awards achieved.

To give students further insight into the process, we’ll also be conducting a live demo session of how our consultants work with students to optimise their essays.

WORKSHOP TOPICS

3:00-3:50pm - Tailoring your US application

What does it mean when US admissions officers say they want to hear your personal voice and your story come out through your application? A US college education is holistic and hence, so is the application process. Your grades matter, but so do your extracurricular activities and achievements.

Your challenge lies in weaving the threads of your academic and extracurricular history into a compelling and strategic narrative, designed specifically for each university you’re gunning for. We will show you how to navigate the nuances of each component of the application for different types of schools you’re targeting, using examples from our students who have been admitted to top schools such as Stanford and Northwestern. One of our Senior Consultants (Geoff Kyi, Brown University graduate) will also skype in to conduct a short session demonstrating how we work with students on their applications.

3:00-3:50pm - Tailoring your UK application

If you’re applying to UK universities, they want to know why you want to study the subject you’re applying for at a deep level and to be convinced by your reasoning. For UK admissions, your grades is by far the most important component of your application. You’re also looking at writing an all-purpose 4000-character personal statement that demonstrates your academic interest in the specific course you’re applying for. We will share about the strategy for choosing your 5 UCAS schools and what the personal statement should really be about.

If you’re targeting Oxbridge (Oxford or Cambridge), you will be up against additional hurdles - the relevant admissions test and the much-feared Oxbridge interview with a professor. Our consultant, Nicole (Oxford graduate with First Class Honours), will shed light on what separates the admitted applications from those that are not, referring to Crimson’s students who have been admitted to Oxbridge, UCL, Imperial, LSE and many more schools.

4:00-4:30pm - [For Parents] Supporting your child in the challenging journey to US/UK universities

"Is it safe? Can my child handle living and learning away from home? What are my financing options? How can I support my child in doing the necessary preparation to get into and do well in university overseas?"

Going overseas for university is a decision that affects the whole family. While this is an exciting milestone, it is also some of the most challenging times for stress levels. Making the best decision is no small feat. Crimson has guided many families on these key issues, so let us answer your questions!

Children (students) are welcome to join this workshop but find it boring :) We suggest students take this time to talk individually with our Crimson staff about any specific questions they have.

Parents, feel free attend the prior US or UK workshops as well. If you can have your children attend those, it will be most beneficial for them.
