As part of the Chapel’s Open Day there will be an illustrated presentation by Victoria University – Virtual Futuna.
About this event
The presentation in Futuna Chapel as part of Wellington Heritage is proudly hosted by the Friends of Futuna Charitable Trust and generously supported by LT McGuinness.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, in-person attendance is limited to 50 people so this event will also be livestreamed.
This event will examine the photogrammetry documentation of heritage buildings and its potential application in research studies and public dissemination in the global digital realm.
During December 2020 the interior of Futuna Chapel was documented using photogrammetry - a process to digitally stitch together 2D images to generate a 3D virtual reality model.
A widely accessible and replicable process for documenting heritage buildings was developed, using only consumer devices such as smartphones and mobile applications.
User research explored ways to make experiences of Futuna's digital twin engaging and valuable. This work revealed that site-specific human stories can build connections between visitors and their virtual experiences of a heritage building. The resulting prototype VR model reveals the exciting potential for the development of a virtual visitor experience of the chapel as well as provide a template for other virtual visitor experiences of heritage buildings and sites both in NZ and globally.
Presenters:
- Professor Marc Aurel Schnabel – Dean of Architecture and Design Innovation at VUW
- Michael Weir – MArch(Prof) student at VUW
- Katie Scheid – User Experience designer researching the potentials for extended reality applications Masters Student – VUW
A koha would be appreciated to help cover costs.
NZ registered architects attending this presentation will receive 20 CPD points.
Please note that if Covid-19 restrictions force the event to be cancelled, any donations given at time of booking can not be refunded.
