Description

Don't miss out on a very special member-only expedition to Russell and Waitangi from 4-6 February 2018 developed with guidance and support from Dame Jenny Shipley, Tania Simpson and Judge Caren Fox.

Participants will be immersed in Waitangi Day commemorations and able to explore the historical and future context of the Treaty of Waitangi.

The expedition will include 2 nights accommodation at Russell Cottages, in the heart of Russell, and a range of activities and experiences in both Russell and Waitangi as follows.

Day 1, beginning 3pm Sunday 4 February – we will gather at Dame Jenny Shipley’s residence in Russell to discuss the Historical Context of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Declaration of Independence - what was the environment leading up to signing, who were the key players, and what did they agree to?

This session will be followed by dinner at Dame Jenny’s residence.

Day 2, Monday 5 February – we will be based at Waitangi Treaty Grounds for the day with a focus on Bringing the spirit of the Treaty to lifedebates and interpretations and the implication of the Treaty going forward. The day will include a guided tour of the Treaty Grounds and museum, before returning to Russell for dinner at the Duke of Marlborough Hotel.

Day 3, Tuesday 6 February – we will take an early ferry to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in time for the dawn ceremony at Te Whare Rūnanga, followed by the flag raising ceremony and watching the canoes come in. The formal programme will close after breakfast leaving you at leisure to stay and spend the day enjoying the commemorations at Waitangi, observing and soaking up the atmosphere, or make your way home at your leisure.

This expedition will be limited to 22 attendees so we invite you to register your interest promptly. We kindly ask that you commit to attending for the whole agenda. Check out event Cancellation Policy below.
