About this event

Seeking asylum in a Covid-19 world

Many restrictions on human rights have been imposed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. New Zealand has been particularly effective in preserving the right to health of its citizens by restricting freedom of movement. But what about the right to seek asylum, which requires migration across international borders in order to be effective?

The Dean of Auckland Law School, Professor Pene Mathew, is an expert in refugee law. She will speak about the ongoing crisis in refugee protection.

This crisis, which predates the pandemic and has been exacerbated by it, requires New Zealand and other developed countries to create more pathways for migration to safety as well as finding ways of better protecting refugees wherever they may be.

This event will be a wonderful opportunity to catch up with fellow alumni and to meet Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dawn Freshwater.

  • Dress code: smart casual
  • Canapés and drinks will be served
