Wellington Forum: Privacy and Ethics in Data Science - 12th May
Event Information
About this event
Data ethics is a key component of the data science pipeline. Companies need to understand how to use data, productionise machine learning models safely, remove bias and embed cultural awareness and diversity in their data science projects.
Come along to hear from some of NZ’s leaders in Privacy and Ethics in Data Science.
The event is free of charge and kindly sponsored by Ministry of Social Development (MSD).
Our Speakers
Jared Mackley-Crump - Data Ethics at Stats NZ
The presentation will be about data ethics and will focus on work Stats NZ are doing in our role as Government Chief Data Steward.
Jared is a policy advisor with the System Policy team, which sits within the Data System Leadership unit and GCDS function. Pre-Stats NZ, he came from a social science research and education background.
Daniel Lensen - Are we there yet? Safe and effective algorithms at MSD
Daniel will discuss MSD’s journey to building operational algorithms that are both safe and effective. He’ll explain the approaches used to embed privacy, human rights, and ethics advice as early as possible in new ideas, the best practice guidelines used by data scientists and the governance processes for signing off new algorithms. He’ll also share the key lessons: what’s worked and what hasn’t, as well as what’s happening next.
Daniel leads MSD’s Data Science and Business Intelligence teams, which deliver exploratory reporting, advanced analytics and interactive tools for frontline staff. He’s been involved in the implementation of a range of different operational algorithms over the last five years. Through this he’s seen the value of getting all the experts in a room together to solve tricky issues, plus a lot of tenacity and pragmatism.
Kylie Reiri - Using Māori data, safely
What does it mean to use Māori data safely? Why is it important, what should you consider, and how should you do it? Come along to hear some practical examples of Data Sovereignty in action using Māori Data Sovereignty and other indigenous principles applied to data science projects. This talk will start with history of data in Aotearoa, so we may look to the past for lessons to take us into the future.
Kylie is the CEO of Nicholson Consulting, whose vision is Analytics, for the good of our communities. She’s on a major haraenga to bring a focus back on people in the tech world, for better lives and better communities.
Kylie is dedicated to tackling analytical solutions that contribute to a fairer Aotearoa. She is passionate about data sovereignty and the safe use of Māori data, especially in the use of automated decisions and artificial intelligence. In her life at home, you will find Kylie enjoying quality time with her whānau and raising her two small tamariki in a bilingual home.
We look forward to seeing you at this exciting event,
