Help to restore the wetland environment by planting a variety of native plants with us at Matuku Link - at the head of the Te Henga wetland.

About this event

Wetland restoration is a powerful means by which we can restore native biodiversity but it’s also an important part of looking after our Moana which is why MERC & Matuku Link are teaming up for a planting spree as part of our Seaweek celebration in the Waitakere area.

The Waitakere River flows through the Te Henga wetland into the Tasman and it’s an important habitat for many of our native species which need healthy rivers to complete their life cycle. One way we can take action to help 'clean' the water before it reaches waterways is by restoring wetlands. The plants in the wetlands provide shelter, filter out the pollutants, and help the soil and silt settle before the water reaches the ocean.

The native species we will be planting are eco-sourced and grown in Matuku’s nursery tended by dedicated volunteers. Countless hours of volunteer work have gone into propagating and planting thousands of trees, sedges, and reeds to restore the alluvial flats to a range of wetland habitats, but there is much more work to do – and this is your chance to get involved!

At our event you’ll also have the opportunity to go for a guided tour and learn about the natural history of the site; the background of Matuku Link, the importance of wetlands and their amazing biodiversity. You might even see some wetland inhabitants - an endangered pateke (brown teal), some tuna (eels) and if you're really lucky, the namesake matuku (bittern).

After planting we’ll provide a wholesome lunch & hot drinks. All ages are welcome to participate in planting and share kai!

You must register for this event! We need your emergency contact details and will need to know how many to cater for. Please fill out this Google form if you are participating.

Please bring your own refillable water bottle and wear sturdy boots or shoes you won’t mind getting muddy (and please arrive with them clean - remember we don’t want to spread kauri dieback!) You don’t need to bring any tools, but you can bring your favourite spade if you want if it’s been cleaned. 😊

The physical address for Matuku link is: 111 Bethells Road, Te Henga, Auckland. The entry is opposite the Waitakere Fire Station, and there is parking on-site, but we recommend carpooling where possible.

This event is made possible thanks to collaboration between Matuku Link and MERC.
