About this event
Women in the public eye
Netsafe has noticed an increasing number of women experiencing online abuse because their job requires them to have an online presence. Gendered abuse is particularly prevalent amongst women with a media or public profile. The nature of the abuse varies, but typically includes bullying, harassment, defamation and unwanted negative comments about their appearance or competence.
Recent research conducted by the eSafety Commissioner in Australia (https://www.esafety.gov.au/research/how-online-abuse-impacts-women-working-lives) confirmed what Netsafe has been seeing. One in three women surveyed had experienced online abuse, and the rate was higher for women with a public or media profile. Most of the abuse happened on social media and many acknowledged the negative impact it had on their mental wellbeing and personal confidence. Many women took a backwards step professionally, avoided leadership positions and stopped discussing topics they felt were inflammatory as a result of the abuse.
Some of these women are resigned to it being “part-and-parcel” of a public role. Netsafe believes it shouldn’t be. Ever. Join us at 07:30am on Monday 25th July 2022 at Hello Sunday Cafe, 6 Elgin Street, Sydenham, to hear Christchurch City Councillor, Sara Templeton’s experience with an online troll and how she fought back to ensure no one else would be targeted by her abuser.
All genders welcome to attend.
Ticket includes breakfast.
