About this event

Join a team from Victoria University for a workshop that will provide insight into the current international best practices relating to micro- and nano-grid systems for remote, off-the-grid contexts like Aotea.

Some of the technical and economic aspects of microgrids will be presented with some exploration of the different technical and business model configurations that are applied to service energy needs in different contexts.

The workshop will then explore, with the participants' input, the energy needs of the different communities across Aotea, and how these needs might evolve over time. The outputs of this workshop will be a first step in understanding what might be practical and acceptable on the island and inform future research into the design and optimisation of distributed, and possibly integrated, energy systems across Aotea.

The workshop will be co-hosted with Professor Alan Brent, the Chair in Sustainable Energy Systems at Victoria University of Wellington. The Chair aims to identify and embed more sustainable practices in the energy sector at a national, regional and local level, thereby enabling Aotearoa’s just transition to sustainable energy. The Chair is aligned with the strategic commitment of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington to enhance the resilience and sustainability of our natural and cultural heritage and to meet current and future challenges, by engaging with partners and stakeholders across society in trans-disciplinary ways.
