All Saints Preservation Trust Leighton Buzzard
A church has stood on the site of the present building in Leighton Buzzard for more than 1,000 years. Today's church, dedicated to All Saints, dates from 1277 and is an outstanding example of early English architecture with a 60m broach spire on a squat tower. Inside it boasts a magnificent 15th century roof adorned with angels and saints contrasting with 25 ferocious gargoyles around the outside. The church was nearly lost in a massive fire in 1985, but it has been painstakingly restored.
All Saints Preservation Trust was set up in 1999 to raise and manage funds for the preservation of All Saints parish church, Leighton Buzzard, a Grade 1 Listed building. An architect’s report the previous year had thrown up some serious structural problems which needed urgent attention and a seven phase programme of repairs was proposed the cost of which was beyond the resources of the local congregation. The Trust is an independent charity set up as a response.
Not all the Trustees are church people but all share the determination to see the town’s oldest and finest building maintained for future generations to use and enjoy. Its success can be seen in the building which now looks at its best; but there is always maintenace and repair work to be done to keep it so. Please look out for our fundraising events, both here and on our website.
